Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade after World War II, up to 350,000 ethnic Italians were displaced from the border zone between Italy and Yugoslavia known as the Julian March. History in Exile reveals the subtle yet fascinating contemporary repercussions of this often overlooked yet contentious episode of European history. Pamela Ballinger asks: What happens to historical memory and cultural identity when state borders undergo radical transformation? She explores displacement from both the viewpoints of the exiles and those who stayed behind. Yugoslavia's breakup and Italy's political transformation in the early 1990s, she writes, allowed these people to bring their histories to the public eye after nearly half a century. Examining the political and cultural contexts in which this understanding of historical consciousness has been formed, Ballinger undertakes the most extensive fieldwork ever done on this subject--not only around Trieste, where most of the exiles settled, but on the Istrian Peninsula (Croatia and Slovenia), where those who stayed behind still live. Complementing this with meticulous archival research, she examines two sharply contrasting models of historical identity yielded by the "Istrian exodus": those who left typically envision Istria as a "pure" Italian land stolen by the Slavs, whereas those who remained view it as ethnically and linguistically "hybrid." We learn, for example, how members of the same family, living a short distance apart and speaking the same language, came to develop a radically different understanding of their group identities. Setting her analysis in engaging, jargon-free prose, Ballinger concludes that these ostensibly very different identities in fact share a startling degree of conceptual logic.

It provides an overview of the different causes of the downfall of Morsi and the Islamists in Egypt. Additionally, it is posited that Morsi’s coup-proofing strategy, which was modeled after Mubarak’s, was responsible for the military turning against him. The author also argues that the Muslim Brotherhood’s belief system played a major role in their downfall. The strained civil-military relations in Egypt are examined, as well as its likely future. This project will be of interest to diplomats; journalists; International Affairs specialists, strategists, or scholars of Egyptian politics and the Arab Spring; and anyone interested in social movements and democratization in the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machines of war, powered by the boundless energy supply of the spirits of the dead, have started to resurface in The System, only partially aware of the killing, living half in a dream, half in a state of desperate rage. However, these Cherine Wars are only a relic, a throwback to a time when technology, technology only one man could have conceived, was brought into the knowledge of men. Then, light had gone out of the heavens in the blink of an eye, so had the means for clustered intergalactic travel, and in time people completely forgot they were once connected to the rest of the universe. Lost to the heavens written in ancient scripts, The System drifts in eternal darkness with only the light of the Twin Stars, the Centra Sun and the Second Sun. At present, little is known about the Inner System and its worlds to the more technologically developed Outer System. One thing that is known is that it is either ruled by a man, a God, an empirical corporation, or a religious cult. There exists a unified trade from their worlds evident most of all on the planet Santoon, where the Outer System world of Foster has stationed its Seventh Legion First Battalion. The Sijan corporate empire on Outer Worlds vastly differs from the Inner System's ecclesiocracy ruling over its worlds' inhabitants. As he feeds on the otherwise unsuspecting commerce of greedy and honest traders alike, he amasses immense stockpiles of lucrenium from beneath their worlds' surfaces, repurposing battle-ready machines harboring the spirits of the dead known as Cherine Wars, as collectors, miners, gatherers of a destructive element with the power to destroy The System entire. As eons passed, people forgot there were once means for super-longevity, and as technology now begins to gain a foothold on the edge of human consciousness, only General Lancaster, spearheading the Seventh Legion of the Outer System, can lead the impetus to restoring order in The System out of a demigod's reign of biorbital terror and religious indoctrination on a system-wide scale. With a newly formed group of transcendental warriors backed by the full force of Cherine Loyalists, he intends to free the spirits of the damned, and take back the heavens that once belonged to them.

This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of modern Egypt is more than just a cavalcade of colourful personalities. To get beneath the skin of the Egyptians themselves it is essential to recognize the pressures to which they have so long been subjected; to understand how, overburdened by history and exiled from power in their own land, they have been elbowed out by foreign manipulation to a point where explosive action was the only remedy. From the time that Napoleon brought Europe to Egypt in 1798, few areas of the globe have aroused more passions than this ancient land. Napoleon's own dreams of glory were short-lived, but he paved the way for Mohammed Ali - the 'rogue' Pasha that Palmerston wanted to 'chuck in the Nile' - to found a dynasty and very nearly take over the whole Ottoman Empire with his fellah armies. Less astute, his son Said was hoaxed by de Lesseps over the Suez Canal concession, and his grandson Ismail precipitated a British occupation with the de facto reign of the hard-line proconsuls such as Cromer and Kitchener.Although the British presence brought prosperity to Egypt and security for monarchs like Fouad and Farouk, it also caused growing frustration to the multiplying mass of the Egyptian people. Finally Gamal Abdel Nasser put an end to the ancien rgime and threw the Europeans out again - to embark on his astonishing career as aspirant leader of the Arab world. In this entertaining book, Raymond Flower unfolds the panorama of events, from the arrival of Napoleon to the death of Nasser, not only as it appears to an historian, but also to the man in the street in Cairo. Well qualified to do so, having lived there for part of the historic span he covers, Mr. Flower has known most of the significant figures in the days of Farouk as well as in the revolutionary Egypt, and thus is able to give an enthralling and well-balanced account of a vital period in recent history.
