This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These mad immortal stories, now surfaced from the literary underground, have addicted legions of American readers, even though the high literary establishment continues to ignore them. In Europe, however (particularly in Germany, Italy, and France where he is published by the great publishing houses), he is critically recognized as one of America's greatest realist writers. "Collections such as The Most Beautiful Woman in Town (1983) . . . showcase Bukowski's impressive narrative and creative abilities in stories that most often take place in bars and dingy apartments but are not simply about sex and alcohol. They're about staying alive in a world where the only choice for the majority of us is to face a firing squad in an office every day—the post office, in Bukowski's case—or maintain a commitment to creativity as we struggle to pay for food and a meager place to live." —Adam Perry, Santa Fe Reporter Charles Bukowski was born in Andernach, Germany on August 16, 1920, the only child of an American soldier and a German mother. At the age of three, he came with his family to the United States and grew up in Los Angeles. He attended Los Angeles City College from 1939 to 1941, then left school and moved to New York City to become a writer. His lack of publishing success at this time caused him to give up writing in 1946 and spurred a ten-year stint of heavy drinking. After he developed a bleeding ulcer, he decided to take up writing again. He worked a wide range of jobs to support his writing, including dishwasher, truck driver and loader, mail carrier, guard, gas station attendant, stock boy, warehouse worker, shipping clerk, post office clerk, parking lot attendant, Red Cross orderly, and elevator operator. He also worked in a dog biscuit factory, a slaughterhouse, a cake and cookie factory, and he hung posters in New York City subways. Bukowski published his first story when he was twenty-four and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. His first book of poetry was published in 1959; he went on to publish more than forty-five books of poetry and prose, including Pulp (Black Sparrow, 1994), Screams from the Balcony: Selected Letters 1960-1970 (1993), and The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992). City Lights Publishers have published more of his works including Absence of a the Hero, Portions of a Wine-Stained Notebook, Notes of a Dirty Old Man, Tales of Ordinary Madness, and The Bell Tolls for No One. He died of leukemia in San Pedro on March 9, 1994.

This book was released on 2000-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing from both the utopian-political and the romantic-baroque styles of past Cuban literature, Ponte deftly sketches a picture of a contemporary Cuba that is very different from the stereotype of Caribbean life, full of music and dance and colorful celebration. An old man and a six-year-old prodigy have a rendezvous to play chess at a forlorn railroad station. Randomly riding trains, a woman keeps company with a strange assembly of men. An unemployed historian falls in love with an enigmatic astrologer, and the two live out their tragedy in the streets of Havana as homeless vagrants. A father and son take an aimless stroll after lunch to see the whores along the Malecon, Havana's seaside promenade. A young man, one of the last Cuban students to go to the Soviet Union on a foreign-study program, returns to Havana, where he explores his identity-looking at childhood photos with his grandfather, spending time with old friends, and obsessively seeking news of a woman he had known and loved in Russia. In a style both lucid and translucent, Ponte shapes intricate stories of self-discovery and metaphysical revelation in spare and allusive prose. About the Authors Antonio Jose Ponte was born in 1964 in Matanzas, Cuba, and studied at the University of Havana. He worked for some years as an engineer, and then as a screenwriter. In addition to writing short stories and fiction, Ponte has published prize-winning collections of poetry and essays. His work has been published in France, Germany, and Spain. This is his first book to be published in the United States. Cola Franzen is the translator of over twenty books, including Poems of Arab Andalusia, Dreams of the Abandoned Seducer by Alicia Borinsky, and Horses in the Air by Jorge Guillen (recipient of the Academy of American Poets Harold Morton Landon Translation Award 2000). Review "In his first book to be published in the U.S., Ponte gives readers a short collection of six elliptical stories from inside the Cuban revolutionary experience, closer in spirit to the fiction of Eastern European dissidents than to that of Caribbean fabulists, unlike exiled writers who see the island as either a mythical homeland or a political cause.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating the celluloid expression of the Beat spirit—arguably the most sustained legacy in U.S. counterculture—Naked Lens is a comprehensive study of the most significant interfaces between the Beat writers, Beat culture, and cinema. Naked Lens features key Beat players and their collaborators, including William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Brion Gysin, Antony Balch, Ron Rice, John Cassavetes, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Klaus Maeck, and Gus van Sant. As well as examining clearly Beat-inspired films such as Pull My Daisy, Chappaqua, and The Flower Thief, Jack Sargeant discusses cinéma vérité and performance films (Shadows and Wholly Communion), B-movies (The Subterraneans and Roger Corman’s Bucket of Blood), and Hollywood adaptations (Heart Beat and Barfly). The second half of the book is devoted to an extensive analysis of the films relating to William Burroughs, from Antony Balch’s Towers Open Fire to David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch. This book also contains the last ever interview with writer Allen Ginsberg, recorded three months before his death in April 1997.

Book excerpt: ""Moral Divorce" and Other Stories is a collection of short stories by Jacinto Octavio Picon y Bouchet (1852-1923), a member of Spain's Generation of 1868. A bibliophile and a Francophile (his mother was French); a native of Madrid who loved Paris; a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (of the Spanish language) and the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts (he published a volume of art criticism entitled the Life and Works of Don Diego Velazquez); a novelist, short story writer, and journalist; a liberal (in politics, religion, social philosophy); a Spaniard steeped in his own literature (from Cervantes to Galdos) but knowledgeable about others; an aesthete whose appreciation of French cooking prompted Emilia Pardo Bazan (probably tongue in cheek) to provide a recipe for a "Jacinto Octavio Omelette" in her Modern Spanish Cuisine; a friend of literary greats of his time (Clarin, Galdos, Palacio Valdes, Pardo Bazan, Valera, etc.); and a loving father whose son's premature death at the age of forty nearly drove him to despair, Picon deserves to be read anew, for in his stories he deals with timeless and universal themes - freedom, justice, equality, compassion, suffering, love, and hope."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: A teacher who loves to discipline his students, a friend who returns to kill, a hotel that retains its guests, a wife who dreads the return of her husband, an educationalist whose spirit remains in his school, a pickpocket who finds the wrong victim, an unending flight, an actress who literally lives her role… The Shadows Return (and other stories) is a compelling collection of short stories. They are tightly woven, haunting and inevitably carry a sting in the tail. The author races the reader to the end, and, with a deft flick, turns him around to face the way he has come. Each story is meticulously detailed and knit like a collage. The last few lines convert each painting into a hologram, where the reader is not sure what the picture really is. Won’t you enjoy the ride?

It is one of those laidback small towns where everything moves at a snail’s pace, perched on the very edge of modernity and antiquity. This is a place where one would think that nothing ever happens. But, people talk and they tell stories of things that happened to other people. Stories of a man who cared too much that he is blind to his own bad influence, of people desperate for love, of one who dare not risk another heart-break, of one who desires for that they cannot have and of a person who just want to be loved. These are people whose desire blurred the thin line between love, lust and loneliness.
