He won gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, was an All-American football player at the Carlisle Indian School, in the first class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and played major league baseball for the New York Giants. But despite his colossal skills, Thorpe's life was a struggle against the odds. As a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, he encountered duplicitous authorities who turned away from him when their reputations were at risk. At Carlisle, he dealt with the racist assimilationist philosophy Kill the Indian, Save the Man. His gold medals were unfairly rescinded because he had played minor league baseball. His later life was troubled by alcohol, broken marriages, and financial distress. But for all his travails, Thorpe did not succumb. The man survived, complications and all, and so did the myth"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part about the specific Stoic doctrine on moral progress (prokop ) attention is first given to the subtle view developed by the early Stoics, who categorically denied the existence of any mean between vice and virtue, and yet succeeded in giving moral progress a logical and meaningful place within their ethical thinking. Subsequently, the position of later Stoics (Panaetius, Hecato, Posidonius, Seneca, Musonius Rufus, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius) is examined. Most of them appear to adopt a basically 'orthodox' view, although each one of them lays his own accents and deals with Chrysippus' tenets from his own personal perspective. Occasionally, the 'heterodox' position of Aristo of Chios proves to have remained influential too. The second part of the study deals with the polemical reception of the Stoic doctrine of moral progress in (Middle-)Platonism. The first author who is discussed is Philo of Alexandria. Philo deals with the Stoic doctrine in a very ideosyncratical way. He never explicitly attacked the Stoic view on moral progress, although it is clear from various passages in his work that he favoured the Platonic-Peripatetic position rather than the Stoic one. Next, Plutarch's position is examined, through a detailed analysis of his treatise 'De profectibus in virtute'. Finally, attention is given to two school handbooks dating from the period of Middle-Platonism (Alcinous and Apuleius). In both of them, the Stoic doctrine is rejected without many arguments, which shows that a correct (and anti-Stoic) conception of moral progress was regarded in Platonic circles as a basic knowledge for beginning students. The whole discussion is placed into a broader philosophical-historical perspective by the introduction (on the philosophical tradition before the Stoa) and the epilogue (about later discussions in Neo-Platonism and early Christianity).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a magisterial narrative of the most turbulent decade in Anglo-Irish history: a decade of unleashed passions that came close to destroying the parliamentary system and to causing civil war in the United Kingdom. It was also the decade of the cataclysmic Great War, of an officers' mutiny in an elite cavalry regiment of the British Army and of Irish armed rebellion. It was a time, argues Ronan Fanning, when violence and the threat of violence trumped democratic politics. This is a contentious view. Historians have wished to see the events of that decade as an aberration, as an eruption of irrational bloodletting. And they have have been reluctant to write about the triumph of physical force. Fanning argues that in fact violence worked, however much this offends our contemporary moral instincts. Without resistance from the Ulster Unionists and its very real threat of violence the state of Northern Ireland would never have come into being. The Home Rule party of constitutionalist nationalists failed, and were pushed aside by the revolutionary nationalists Sinn Fein. Bleakly realistic, ruthlessly analytical of the vacillation and indecision displayed by democratic politicians at Westminster faced with such revolutionary intransigence, Fatal Path is history as it was, not as we would wish it to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often featuring in lists of the world's best walks, the South West Coast Path is 630 miles long, and passes through two World Heritage Sites. This guide to the path is a modern take on the traditional (turn right at the stile, and follow the footpath to the bridge) guidebook: instead of telling readers where to go step by step, Stephen gives fantastic ideas for what to do as they travel along the path. There are so many amazing adventures and places to visit (some 'secret' and some well known) and this guide highlights 1,000 of them, all situated along the route. After an Introduction giving a history of the path and the stories of the people who made it (Why is this path the most popular National Trail? Why is it so closely associated with tales of King Arthur? When is the best time to visit?) the bulk of the book focuses on all the amazing things you can do along the path itself. It is divided into regions, with over 70 adventures/highlights per region: West Somerset, North Devon, Torridge, North Cornwall, South Cornwall, South Hams, Torbay, Teignbridge, East Devon, West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland, Purbeck and Poole. Each region is introduced with a 'Best For' section, with the ten best places for secret swims, tidal woods, fossils etc. It then highlights where to go, each place accompanied by basic directions, a short description and postcode/map coordinates. Readers can use this guide whilst walking the path in either direction, and at home when planning – Stephen Neale's engaging writing and beautiful photography make this book a joy to spend time with.

Book excerpt: Torn from Stone - Book One The creature under the sink says you’re not human, and only a trip into time itself will show you the truth. After a lackluster birthday party, Phoenix finds a strange creature hiding under her sink. Doing what any sensible person would do. She pokes it. And when that little guy wakes up, he rocks her world. Phoenix isn’t human. The little guy under her sink just told her so. She’s actually a Traveller; a beautiful humanoid who moved through time on multi-coloured wings that filled the sky. So why is she here, sitting on the floor of her tiny apartment with a strange creature named Sid? Why doesn’t she remember any of this? And where are her wings? Following Sid into time itself, Phoenix embarks on a wild adventure. If the Sirens don’t kill her, meeting a talking Yeti might. And ancient Egypt is amazing when it isn’t so ancient. Although she could do without all the snake-men chasing her. And through all this, the most terrifying man in her home world, a silver-skinned warrior named The Archer, is hunting her down. Don’t worry, when the stuff really hits the fan, Phoenix isn’t afraid to swing her baseball bat at whatever is in her way. They say you can’t get blood from a stone, but maybe you can get wings? Either way, Phoenix sure as hell is going to try. Can a city girl travel to ancient lands, do battle with fantastical creatures, and literally find her wings? Bounty of Ash - Book Two So you’ve travelled through time, reclaimed your wings and kicked butt along the way. Now you can relax, right? Not so fast. One minute Phoenix is lounging around her apartment, her wings magically tucked away, the next there’s a yeti in her kitchen trying to drag her back to the Void. And why, you ask? Well, there’s a bounty on Phoenix’s head and the prize is a share of her power; an offer so enticing the entire Void is hunting her down. Narrowly escaping the yeti, Phoenix starts running. Her home in the forest is still safe, even if her apartment in the human world no longer is, but she can’t do this alone. If she’s going to end this bounty, she’ll need help from the most dangerous man in the Void. A creature who strikes fear into the hearts of yetis, minions and everyone in between: The Archer. If Phoenix thought things were going to calm down after she found her wings, she was sorely mistaken. When every creature in the Void is hot on your tail, what do you do? Well, first you go to your brother’s birthday party, then you kick some ass. Mend the Flesh - Book Three When you wake up in a strange place with the flesh literally stripped from your bones, what do you do? When last we saw Phoenix she had just finished exploding. Literally. She exploded in a blast so big it sent minions and evil warriors running. Now she’s a vulnerable collection of tendon and bone, hiding out in the home of the only other member of her species, a reclusive curmudgeon named Royal. When her old friend Sid turns up on the doorstep, Phoenix is catapulted into a minion showdown that only a meeting with the Guard can resolve. Gathering her allies from all corners of the Void, Phoenix attempts to heal her broken body and save as many minions as she can. When a big tough Traveller has to rely on a pair of gargoyles to cut her out of her pants, you know things are bad.
